With the right parts and know-how, you can repair and maintain your motorcycle from the comfort of your own garage. However, without the right tools for the job, you won’t get very far. Here is Gray Area KTM’s guide to motorcycle repair tools.

Packing the Toolkit

Different motorcycle models usually have slightly different maintenance needs. This list is fairly basic by design, so feel free to make additions or substitutions as needed. Check your owner’s guide for more details about how to keep your motorcycle running as smoothly as possible.

Fold-Up Allen Wrench

Allen wrenches can be used to remove or tighten your motorcycle’s fasteners, granting you access to your motorcycle’s internal components. If you’re packing a repair kit to take on the road, use a fold-up Allen wrench to save space. Just make sure that the Allen wrench fits your motorcycle’s fasteners!

Flathead Screwdriver

Thin, narrow flathead screwdrivers are better for motorcycle maintenance since they can more easily fit into tight spaces. Try to find a flathead screwdriver with a magnetic tip if possible. The magnet can be used to pick up dropped fasteners.

Pliers

Pliers can be used to straighten, loosen, and tighten parts and fasteners. They’re also good for situations where cold and/or wet conditions might make it difficult to get a proper grip.

Multi-tool

Multi-tools are very useful for motorcycle maintenance, particularly when packing a portable repair kit. Having one tool that combines several functions into one can save you a ton of space. Look for a multitool model that has the attachments you need.

Flashlight

Flashlights are useful for illuminating your motorcycle’s inner nooks and crannies. They are also helpful for roadside repairs and other situations where you might not have as much light as you’d like.

Battery Cables and Fuses

Battery cables are lightweight, don’t take up much space, and can be used to fix a variety of common battery issues. There’s no reason not to keep a few around just in case. Packing a few spare fuses can also be helpful, as long as you make sure that the fuses are compatible with your motorcycle.
